Première students see Hamlet performance

On Monday night last week, Mr. McCann and Miss Daly took some of the Premiere students to see a pre-recorded performance of Hamlet at Le Balzac cinema in Paris.

Filmed in London in 2015, it was a recording of the sold-out run of shows starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the eponymous tragic hero. Particularly striking was the staging of Elsinore as a decadent, baroque palace, which in the second half was filled with litter and overturned chairs.

Also interesting for teachers and students alike was the portrayal of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, Hamlet's childhood friends. The students are studying Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead by Tom Stoppard for their OIB English Literature exam, so it was a chance for us to see them in the flesh!

Reviews from the attendees:

"Shakespeare would be proud indeed!"

"Careful, Shakespeare, Benedict just turned your celebrated tragedy into a Cumberbatch fan-making machine..."

"Existential theatre at its best! Or, was it?"

"Something was (not) rotten in the state of Denmark!"
